RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The New Mexico women’s golf team began play Tuesday at 2026 Mountain West Championship with the opening round of play at the Dinah Shore Course at Mission Hills Country Club. The Lobos shot 14-over during the first 18 holes to be in seventh place after day one.
San Jose State and Colorado State share the first round lead, each shooting 3-over on Tuesday. UNLV and Grand Canyon are tied for third, one shot back at 4-over. Nevada is at 6-over, Wyoming is at 11-over, the Lobos at 14-over, followed by Boise State (15-over), San Diego State (17-over) and Fresno State (26-over).
Freshman Ava Cepeda is T-6th on the individual leaderboard, shooting an even par 72 in her postseason debut. Chelsea Truong shot a 6-over 78, rallying from 6-over on the front nine with a 2-under back nine. Ciara Rushmer also shot 4-over for the Lobos, while Juliette Hole shot 78 and Maria Caparros Levin rounded out the lineup with a first-round 88.
“Ava played very steady for us today and Chelsea had a good comeback on the back nine,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We made a lot of small mistakes that cost us bogeys, but we’re not out of it yet. We’ll come back tomorrow with a solid round.”
The championship continues Wednesday and concludes Thursday at Mission Hills Country Club.
