ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico Baseball outscored Tarleton State 7-1 over the final five frames but couldn’t come all the way back from an early deficit as the Lobos (12-5) fell in their weekend finale with the Texans (11-5) Sunday afternoon at Lobo Field.
The Texans scored each of their first five runs with two outs on the board, plating four in the top of the third with five two-out knocks in a row before tacking on three more on three hits and a pair of walks in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-0.
The Lobos began their rally in the sixth when Anthony Diaz doubled and later scored as New Mexico pushed across two runs. UNM surged back in the seventh with four more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI pinch-hit single from Shane Miller that trimmed the deficit to 8-6. Khalil Walker continued the momentum in the eighth with an RBI single, bringing the Lobos within two, but they couldn’t get any closer after sitting down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Back in the nine hole for the first time this season, Walker led the Lobos offensively with a 3-for-4 day and an RBI, while Diaz finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Tristan Russell added two hits and two runs scored, and Miller drove in three off the bench.
Tyler Do took the loss on the mound after allowing five runs over three innings. The Lobo bullpen combined to throw six innings with four runs allowed, including two scoreless frames from Talor Grubbs to close the game.
New Mexico finished with 12 hits on the afternoon but stranded seven runners in the loss.
