LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico responded twice down the stretch with a pair of clutch three-RBI knocks from Gene Trujillo and Lenny Ashby but couldn’t respond a third time as the Lobos (12-1) fell 8-6 to New Mexico State (5-6) for their first loss of the 2026 season Tuesday at Presley Askew Field.

The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Lobos over their in-state rivals. They’ll square off three more times this season,

The Lobos battled back from a 3-0 deficit to take a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning, highlighted by Gene Trujillo’s three-run homer in the sixth and a three-run double from Lenny Ashby in the seventh.

The Aggies answered immediately with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, stringing together three hits to reclaim the lead and hold on for the victory.

Anthony Diaz led UNM at the plate with a 3-for-4 night while scoring two runs, while Akili Carris added a pair of knocks and Khalil Walker (2 runs) and Karsen Waslefsky (1 run) both added a hit piece along with Trujillo’s bomb and Ashby’s timely double.

In his first start as a Lobo, Tyler Do worked five innings while keeping the damage minimal, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

RHP Tommy White followed with a solid inning of relief, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two. RHP Josh Barnhouse (L, 1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in the seventh.

RHP Talor Grubbs and RHP Seth Edgerton each recorded no outs while issuing walks in the seventh-inning rally, while RHP Ty Cunningham finished the night with two strikeouts in a scoreless eighth to give the Lobos some life late.
