STANFORD, Calif. –– The No. 21 New Mexico men’s golf team continued play Friday at The Goodwin, featuring one of the deepest fields of the season. The Lobos shot 1-under during the second round at Stanford Golf Course and are in fifth place among a 30-team field that features 14 teams in the top 50 and 23 teams in the top 100 of the national rankings
Two shots separate the top five teams, all ranked in the top 35 nationally, after 36 holes of play. No. 24 BYU and No. 35 UCLA share the second round lead at 12-under. Host No. 23 Stanford and No. 31 Long Beach State are tied for third at 11-under, one shot ahead of the Lobos at 10-under.
Mesa Falleur surged up the leaderboard on Friday, shooting a 5-under 65 to end the day T-2nd at 8-under, one shot off the lead. Johnnie Clark also shot in red numbers on Friday, carding a 1-under 69 to be at 3-under for the tournament. Thayer Plewe shot 72 in the second round, Wyatt Provence shot 73 and Emil Albers rounded out the lineup with a 74.
“Mesa really kept us in it today with a solid round, which leaves him and the team in contention going into the final round,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Johnnie finished strong as well, playing the last three holes at 1-under. We are going to need a full team effort tomorrow with five teams within two shots of the lead.”
The Goodwin concludes Saturday at Stanford.
