STANFORD, Calif. –– The No. 21 New Mexico men’s golf team began play Thursday at The Goodwin, featuring one of the deepest fields of the season. The Lobos shot 9-under during the opening round at Stanford Golf Course and are in third place among a 30-team field that features 14 teams in the top 50 and 23 teams in the top 100 of the national rankings
No. 21 Stanford, the tournament host, is the first-round leader at 11-under. No. 31 Long Beach State is in second, one shot back at 10-under, and one shot ahead of the Lobos in third at 9-under. No. 24 BYU, No. 47 SMU and Cal are tied for fourth at 5-under.
The Lobos have four players in the top-30 of the individual leaderboard after 18 holes. Thayer Plewe and Mesa Falleur are T-9th after each carding a 3-under 67 on Thursday. Johnnie Clark is in 18th place at 2-under and Wyatt Provence is in 27th place at 1-under. Emil Albers rounded out the lineup with a 5-over first round.
“I am proud of the way the guys came out today,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We haven’t gotten off to a great start all year and today we really focused on having a final round mindset in Round 1 and putting the team in position to win. Counting four under-par rounds and going 6-under par on the final five holes builds a lot of momentum going into Round 2. Tomorrow we switch to being first out on the course, which gives us an opportunity to go out there and post a number early.”
The Goodwin continues Friday and concludes Saturday at Stanford.
