LAS VEGAS, Nev. –– The No. 19 New Mexico men’s golf team began play Sunday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, one of the most prestigious regular season events of the season. The Lobos shot 5-over during the opening round at Southern Highlands Golf Club and are tied for 12th place after 18 holes among a field that includes five of the top 10 and eight of the top 20 teams in the nation.
Top-ranked Virginia is the first round leader at 11-under, followed by No. 2 Auburn at 6-under. No. 3 Florida and No. 35 Washington are tied for third at 5-under, while No. 12 Illinois is the only other team under par at 1-under. The Lobos will enter the second round just six shots back of fifth place and one shot out of ninth place.
Mesa Falleur and Wyatt Provence each shot even par on Sunday to lead the Lobos during the opening round of play. Johnnie Clark shot 2-over, Thayer Plewe shot 3-over and Emil Albers rounded out the lineup with a round of 5-over.
The Southern Highlands Collegiate continues Monday and concludes Tuesday in Las Vegas.
