AIEA, Hawaii – The New Mexico women’s golf team began play Tuesday at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational with the first two rounds of play at the Pearl of Kalauao. The Lobos shot 27-over during the first 36 holes to be in eighth place after day one.

New Mexico shot 13-over in the morning before shooting 14-over in the afternoon. Second-ranked USC holds the 36-hole lead at 22-under, while No. 23 Arizona State (6-under), Texas State (5-under) and No. 13 North Carolina (2-under) were the only other teams to finish under par after two rounds.

Freshman Ava Cepeda, playing in her home state, is the Lobos’ top individual after day one at 5-over, following rounds of 72 and 75. Ciara Rushmer also shot 1-over in the morning and is at 6-over through two rounds. Chelsea Truong is at 7-over through two rounds, highlighted by a 1-over second round. Rebecca Galasso is at 9-over and Maria Caparros Levin rounds out the lineup at 20-over.

“They hung in there in tough rainy conditions today,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “The course is saturated and we made a few mistakes that we couldn’t come back from. There were lots of good comebacks and birdies today though. I’m excited to see what they can do tomorrow.”

The tournament concludes Wednesday with the final round on the island of Oahu.
