RENO, Nev. – New Mexico Track & Field qualified 10 women and five men to Saturday’s track event finals in their respective events in preliminary action and Ajia Hughes scored eight points for the women in the High Jump and Long Jump on Day Two of Mountain West Indoor Championships on Saturday at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
With Friday’s competition complete, the Lobos lead the women’s team score by a considerable margin – 49 points to second-place Nevada’s 38 – while the men sit in second with 29 points.

WOMEN’S HIGH JUMP
3. Ajia Hughes - 1.81m
Hughes earned All-Mountain West honors with a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.81m to score six points for the Lobo women.

7. Ajia Hughes - 5.94m
Immediately after wrapping up the high jump, Hughes scored two more points in the long jump with a 5.94m jump on her third attempt that netted her a seventh-place overall finish.

9. Cameron Miller - 7.15m
Miller finished just outside of scoring position with a 7.15m jump on his third attempt, going on to finish ninth overall. He’ll return to compete in Saturday’s Triple Jump.

Tilly Simpson led a trio of Lobos that qualified for Saturday's Final with a 4:51.36 performance that won her the third heat, with Li-Mari Dekker crossing second in her heat (4:51.72) to automatically advance and Natalie Bitetti (4:54.50) also making it through with her time.

Abraham carried the momentum from his big performance in Thursday’s DMR into Friday’s prelims, running the fastest time of the preliminary round to ensure he’ll advance to Saturday’s Final. Matthew Endrody – the No. 1 ranked Mile athlete in the conference – did the same, winning his heat with the No. 2 time of the day.

Shelby posted the biggest performance of her career in prelims, knocking .18 seconds off her previous best set in her last competition to snag a spot in finals and move up to No. 2 on the UNM all-time list in her specialty event. She finished second in the first heat with the fourth-fastest time of prelims.

Thompson took a hundredth of a second off his lifetime best as he became the last athlete to make the cut for Saturday’s final, finishing third in a heat that saw the second- and fourth-fastest times of prelims. He remains at No. 4 on the UNM All-Time Indoor list.

Three Lobos made the cut for Saturday’s 400m finals – with qualification being on time alone. Mountain West leader Rebecca Grieve (52.71) ran the fastest time of prelims to ensure she’ll contest both the 400m and 200m on Saturday, with Rasha Badrani (53.86) and Eva Ngom (54.04) both set to join her. Hanna Kiess (54.53) was the first woman out with the ninth-fastest time of the day, with Sofia Pineda crossing in 54.93 to place 12th.

Brodie Young (46.57) and Kahari Wilbon (46.90) both ran below 47 seconds to advance to Saturday’s 400m finals, with Young winning the third heat and Wilbon finishing second in the fourth heat. Those two heats produced the Top Four times of the day.

Looney improved on her program record for the second 60m race in a row with the second-fastest time of the day – her 7.32 altitude-converted mark means she now owns the three fastest 60m performances in school history. Laylah Lawson came up just shy of her 7.54 personal best run at Don Kirby Elite two weeks ago to finish 14th overall on the day.

Both Drebert and Feeney qualified for finals in the Women’s 800m, with Drebert winning her heat with a 2:11.25 performance and Feeney finishing second in hers with a new personal best of 2:08.09 that converts to a 2:07.47, good for No. 6 among UNM athletes indoors all-time. Charlotte O’Meara crossed in 2:12.56 in her MW Championship debut, placing 13th on the day.

In his second race of the day, Endrody won his heat to advance to another final on Saturday, with Rhys Crawford being the first man out despite running just 12 hundredths of a second slower than his teammate with the third-fastest non auto-qualifying performance.
