After leading the Lobos to their second consecutive series sweep in a row, New Mexico’s Khalil Walker has been named Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
It's the second week in a row in which a Lobo earns conference POTW honors after Gene Trujillo was named Player of the Week last week.
Walker batted a team-high .636 on the weekend as the Lobos swept their second four-game series in a row to improve to 8-0 for the first time since 1973, finishing with a 1.915 OPS (.733 OBP / 1.182 slugging) while scoring seven runs and driving in six.
The Lobos are now one of just 18 remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA D1 and hold the fourth-longest active win streak in the nation.
Leading off the Lobo lineup for the first three games of the series, Walker came up with a double, a triple before delivering a clutch two-out pinch hit single in the bottom of the ninth in the weekend finale. That knock drove in the tying run and forced extras, where the Lobos walked off the Bears in the bottom of the 10th to remain unbeaten.
