PALM DESERT, Calif. – The New Mexico women’s golf team concluded play at its opening event of the spring on Monday with the third round of the Alice and John Wallace Golf Classic at Monterey Country Club. The Lobos shot 20-over during the final round, their best round of the event, to finish the tournament in 14th place at 64-over.
No. 2 USC was the only team to finish under par, shooting 17-under to post a 26-shot victory. Eastern Michigan was runner-up at 9-over, while UCLA (18-over), Cal (22-over) and Vanderbilt (24-over) rounded out the top five.
Chelsea Truong led New Mexico during the final round, shooting a 2-over 73 to finish the tournament at 14-over. Ava Cepeda was UNM’s top individual finisher at 10-over after shooting a final round 75. Ciara Rushmer, Maria Caparros Levin and Rebecca Galasso all shot 78 on Monday, while Juliette Hole shot 76 as an individual.
“This was a tough tournament,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We need to handle course conditions better and finish our rounds better. It was a learning experience for sure.”
The Lobos will return to action to Mar. 2-3 with the Las Vegas Country Club Classic.
