PALM DESERT, Calif. – The New Mexico women’s golf team began its spring season on Saturday with the opening round of the Alice and John Wallace Golf Classic at Monterey Country Club. The Lobos shot 21-over during the first round to finish the day tied for 11th place.    

No. 2 USC was the only team to shoot under par on Saturday and leads the tournament at 15-under. Host Long Beach State is second at 6-over, while Boise State (7-over), UCLA (9-over) and Eastern Michigan (10-over) round out the top five.  

Ciara Rushmer led the Lobos on Saturday, matching her season best round of 74. Ava Cepeda shot 4-over and Chelsea Truong shot 5-over. Maria Caparros Levin shot 9-over, while Rebecca Galasso rounded out the lineup with a round of 11-over. Juliette Hole, playing as an individual, shot 6-over.   

The tournament continues Sunday and concludes Monday in Palm Desert.
