ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico closed out a dominant opening weekend in emphatic fashion Sunday afternoon, erupting for 24 runs in a 24-5 run-rule victory over Fordham at Lobo Baseball Field.
It’s the third run-rule win in a row for the Lobos and their first nonconference series sweep since 2023. They're 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 2008, when they won their first seven games to open the year.
The Lobos (4-0) scored in five of their six offensive innings, highlighted by a seven-run third, a six-run fourth and an eight-run sixth that put the game out of reach. UNM finished with 24 runs on 16 hits, drew 10 walks and went 12-for-20 with runners in scoring position in its most complete offensive performance of the series.
A total of eight different Lobos recorded at least one hit, nine different players drove in at least one run and 10 different Lobos crossed the plate.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, the Lobos broke things open in the third. Garrett Rede’s two-out grand slam – UNM’s first four-run homer of the year – ignited the surge, and UNM piled on from there with timely hitting throughout the lineup. The onslaught continued in the fourth and sixth innings, where the Lobos capitalized on walks, hit-by-pitches and extra-base hits to keep the pressure on.

Gene Trujillo added two doubles and two RBI, and Anthony Diaz chipped in three RBI as part of the 16-hit outing.
On the mound, Talor Grubbs (2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R / 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the win in relief in his Lobo debut, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing two runs while striking out two. RHP Ethin Woltz (1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R / 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K), RHP Seth Edgerton and RHP Tommy White (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R / 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K) combined to cover the seven innings, limiting Fordham to five runs on five hits and closing the door in the seventh to seal the run-rule victory.
