ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico got an Opening Day win in dramatic fashion Friday afternoon at Lobo Baseball Field, rallying from down 6-1 in the middle of the sixth and scoring the winning run with two outs on the bottom of the ninth to beat Fordham 10-9.

The Lobos (1-0) erased a five-run deficit with a four-run sixth and a three-run seventh before walking it off in the ninth to counter a late response from the Rams (0-1), finishing with 10 runs on 13 hits to spoil Fordham’s season opener.

They'll play two more tomorrow with a doubleheader that starts at noon before closing out the four-game series on Sunday at 11 a.m.

After falling behind 6-1 in the fourth and failing to get a run across in four consecutive frames, New Mexico finally broke through with four runs on five hits in the sixth. Aidan Kuni ignited the comeback with the Lobos’ home run of the season, a three-run bomb to cut into the deficit – the Lobos plated four runs in that frame, going on to retake the lead with three more in the seventh.

Kuni delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon, finishing 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and five RBI to pace the offense. Lenny Ashby went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Gene Trujillo added three hits and an RBI. Anthony Diaz got on base three times and cashed in a run on all three – not counting the drive off his bat that won the game – while Caleb Herd drove in a run and drew a pair of walks in the win.

Akili Carris added a crucial double that gave the Lobos' rally life in the sixth to go with a pair of walks and Mansy tacked on a run with an RBI single to round out a 13-hit outing for UNM.

All in all, UNM drew seven walks while only striking out six times as a team.

Fordham answered late, retaking the lead with a pair of clutch two-out RBI knocks in the ninth to keep things going in the bottom of the ninth. Base knocks from Ashby and Trujillo -- the third of the day for both -- were followed by a walk from Herd that juiced the bases. Walker took a four-pitch walk to churn out the tying run and the Lobos pushed across the winning run on a costly Fordham error off the bat of Anthony Diaz to cap the rally and send the home crowd home happy.

On the mound, RHP Cristian Mogen (4.0 IP, 3 H, 6 R / 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) struck out five over four innings in the start, allowing six runs – just two earned – while Ty Cunningham (4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R / 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) steadied things with four innings of relief to bridge the game to the ninth. Luke Wiseman (1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R / 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) earned the win after working the final inning, surrendering the lead but retiring three of six faced to give the Lobos a chance to respond one more time.
