LIHUE, Hawaii –– The No. 19 New Mexico men’s golf team began opened play Thursday at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate with the opening round at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The Lobos shot 1-over to finish the opening day tied for fourth place, five shots off the lead.
Loyola Marymount holds the 18-hole lead at 4-under, ahead of Texas A&M at 3-under and Long Beach State at 2-under. The Lobos are tied for fourth at 1-over with BYU, UNLV and UTEP.
Emil Albers led New Mexico during the opening round, shooting a 1-under 69 to be T-14th on the individual leaderboard. Johnnie Clark and Mesa Falleur each shot even par on Thursday, while Thayer Plewe shot 2-over. Wyatt Provence rounded out the lineup with a 4-over 74, while Clark Sonnenberg shot 76 while playing as an individual.
“Today we did a great job sticking to our game plan,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Sometimes it can get frustrating when putts don’t go your way or the wind picks up while you are hitting, but I feel like we did a great job battling through adversity and putting the team in a great spot over the next couple of days.”
The John A. Burns Intercollegiate continues Friday and concludes Saturday on the island of Kauai.
