WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. –– The No. 17 New Mexico men’s golf team began its spring season Monday with the first round of the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club. The Lobos shot 12-over to finish the opening day tied for ninth place amongst the elite field that includes 11 top-60 teams.

No. 15 Pepperdine, the tournament’s host, is the first-round leader at 7-under, while UNLV was the only other team under par at 2-under. SMU and San Diego State are tied for third at 1-over, while No. 19 Utah rounds out the top-five at 4-over.

Emil Albers and Wyatt Provence led New Mexico on Monday, each shooting a 2-over 72. Johnnie Clark shot 73, Mesa Falleur shot 75 and Thayer Plewe rounded out the lineup with a 77.

"In a 54-hole tournament, when you start off slow like we did, you look for the silver lining," said head coach Jake Harrington. "Today that silver lining was playing our final four holes in 3-under par. We look forward to carrying that momentum into tomorrow and focus on winning the day."

The Southwestern Invitational continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at North Ranch Country Club.
