ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— University of New Mexico Head Coach Karley Nelson has added Tom Hurdle to her staff, who will serve as the recruiting coordinator for the Lobos.

Hurdle comes to UNM after coaching at the collegiate and US Soccer levels, most recently as the head men’s and women’s coach at Scottsdale Community College where he coached since 2016.

In his time at Scottsdale Community College, he has coached seven NJCAA All-America players and 40 All-ACCAC players from the women’s program, was named the ACCAC Women’s Coach of the Year in 2023 and 2024 and the ACCAC Men’s Coach of the Year in 2024, accumulating a 62-23-7 record in the last five years as the women’s coach.  

At the US Soccer level, Hurdle has been a talent identification scout since 2019, where he evaluated player talent for national team inclusion. In addition, he was the head coach for Team USA 6v6 MNT from 2018 to 2023, in which he guided the team to the quarterfinals in the 2018 6v6 World Cup and the second round of the 2019 6v6 World Cup.

Hurdle began his coaching career at Grand Canyon in 2011 as a graduate assistant, where he oversaw scheduling, recruiting, travel planning, camps and coaching, as well as created individual player development tools and handled film analysis and opposition scouting.

Leading up to his hire at UNM, Hurdle has held roles as the director of coaching for the Phoenix Premier FC from 2010 to 2026, an assistant and later head coach of Sporting AZ FC from 2017 to 2020, and an assistant coach for the Olympic Development Program for the West Region from 2019 to 2022.

He holds a US Soccer Federation B License, US Soccer Federation Talent ID / Scout License and a US Soccer Club Technical Leadership - Level 1 certificate.

Hurdle graduated from GCU in 2011 with a B.S. in marketing and a M.B.A. and M.S. in leadership from GCU in 2014, all with honors.
