University of New Mexico President Garnett S. Stokes has named Ryan Berryman as Interim Vice President and Director of Athletics, effective January 1, 2026.

Berryman, who currently serves as Deputy Athletics Director and Chief Operating Officer, will provide leadership and continuity for Lobo Athletics as the search for a permanent Vice President and Director of Athletics is conducted.

“Ryan Berryman brings deep institutional knowledge, steady leadership, and a strong commitment to our student-athletes, coaches, and staff,” said President Stokes. “His experience and collaborative approach position him well to guide our athletics program during this transition, and I am confident he will continue to build the momentum of Lobo Athletics.”

Berryman has served in senior leadership roles within UNM Athletics over the course of the past decade, including extensive oversight of budget and multi-year fiscal planning, human resources, procurement, contract administration, legal affairs, and name, image, and likeness agreements. In his current role, he oversees core internal operations and has played a central role in strengthening financial stewardship, operational continuity, and support for the student-athlete experience.

As Interim Vice President and Director of Athletics, Berryman will oversee all aspects of the UNM Department of Athletics, with a focus on maintaining the success of athletics programming, supporting student-athlete success, and positioning the department for long-term leadership.

About Ryan Berryman

Ryan Berryman rejoined UNM Athletics in March 2025 as Deputy Athletic Director and Chief Operating Officer, bringing recent Power Five conference experience and deep familiarity with Lobo Athletics. Before returning to UNM, he served as Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief Financial Officer at the University of Washington, where he led financial planning and business operations during the program’s transition into the Big Ten Conference.

In his most recent role at UNM, Berryman has overseen a broad portfolio of internal operations, including budget oversight and multi-year fiscal planning, human resources, procurement services, equipment operations, licensing and trademark management, merchandising, contract administration, legislative planning, legal affairs, student-athlete licensing agreements, and department travel. He also served as the sport administrator for the women’s soccer and men’s basketball programs, where he was deeply involved in the head coaching hires of both Karley Nelson and Eric Olen.
