ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Vice President/Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo has announced that Head Football Coach Jason Eck has signed a new five-year contract that will keep UNM’s record-setting coach under contract through the 2030 season. The new agreement replaces the five-year contract Eck signed when he was named head coach in December 2024.

“Keeping Coach Eck at UNM was incredibly important to us,” Lovo said. “What he has accomplished in such a short time is truly extraordinary. He brought belief back into our program, united our community, and raised the standard for what New Mexico Football can be. From attendance numbers we have not seen in more than twenty years, to competing for a Mountain West Championship after being picked eleventh in the preseason poll, to delivering our first win over a Big Ten opponent, to our student-athletes setting a record GPA in his first full semester, this season showed what is possible with the right leader in place.”

“Jason, Kimberly, and their entire family have embraced Albuquerque in every way. Their love for this community has been felt by our fans, our student-athletes, and everyone connected to this program. We are thrilled they will continue to make New Mexico their home as we build on this momentum and compete for championships.”

UNM’s 2025 season under Eck has been one of the most memorable in program history. The Lobos recorded their first sellout crowd since 2007 in Eck’s second home game, a 38-20 win over New Mexico State. That victory followed UNM’s 35-10 win over UCLA of the Big Ten, the program’s first-ever win over a Big Ten opponent.

"Jason, Kimberly, and their entire family have embraced Albuquerque in every way. Their love for this community has been felt by our fans, our student-athletes, and everyone connected to this program. We are thrilled they will continue to make New Mexico their home as we build on this momentum and compete for championships"

The Lobos also snapped several long droughts in Eck’s first season, including a 25-year road losing streak at Air Force and a 13-game skid to Colorado State. UNM’s 20–17 win over Colorado State drew the largest November crowd in 17 years, a mark quickly surpassed in the regular-season finale against San Diego State, when 30,575 fans filled University Stadium to see the Lobos beat the Aztecs.

Beyond the field, the Lobos have surged in national visibility, becoming standouts on social media through Eck’s widely shared appearances parodying characters from The Office, Gone in 60 Seconds, and other pop-culture moments, along with his now-famous ride in Albuquerque lowriders. Engagement metrics for the program have reached unprecedented levels under Eck’s leadership.

Eck surpassed Gwinn Henry for the most wins by a first-year Lobo head coach with his ninth victory, UNM’s thrilling 23-17 win over San Diego State, which allowed UNM to tie for first place. Henry set the original mark in 1934. This season is only the seventh since World War II in which UNM has posted eight wins, and Eck is the first coach in program history to achieve bowl eligibility in his debut season.

According to KFord Ratings, UNM ranks No. 1 nationally in total wins over preseason projections, a performance achieved with the fewest returning players in the FBS and the second-most newcomers.

“My family and I immediately felt welcomed and supported by the Albuquerque community. Our fans have been incredible,” said Eck. “We love it here, and we believe New Mexico Football can be a perennial Mountain West contender.”

“We are off to a great start, and we are excited to keep the momentum going by signing this contract extension. Lobo Up!”

UNM President Garnett S. Stokes praised the new agreement.

“Coach Eck has brought extraordinary energy, excellence, and connection to our campus and our state,” President Stokes said. “He has elevated our program on the field, in the classroom, and in the community, and he has done it with integrity and a deep commitment to our student-athletes. We are proud to continue the momentum of UNM Football under his leadership.”

Eck’s contract includes an initial $400,000 increase in guaranteed compensation, with annual increases of $100,000 in each subsequent year. The agreement also adds new incentives for total wins and victories over Power-4 or ranked opponents, and increases incentives tied to conference championship game appearances and wins.

Information regarding UNM’s bowl game selection will be announced on December 7th.
