ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The second week of the season brings the first Mountain West weekly award for New Mexico as Tyler Jones was selected the Old Trapper Mountain West Freshman of the Week as announced on Monday.

Jones earned the honor after a season-high six points, season-high three rebounds and season- and game-high four assists at New Mexico State, in which she also registered two steals to tie her season high in UNM’s win against the Aggies and played a season-high 22 minutes.

In addition, she scored four points, was credited with two steals, two rebounds and two assists in the win against New Orleans.

On the week, the Memphis, Tennessee native averaged 5.0 points per game, 2.5 rebounds per game, 2.0 steals per game and 3.0 assists per game in 20.5 minutes per game.

Against the Aggies, Jones contributed on several plays that led to UNM’s lopsided second quarter score. In the final 2:15, Jones recorded her second steal and dribbled up the floor before finding fellow freshman Laila Abdurraqib, who made the layup through contact and converted the three-point play at the line. She also assisted on Nayli Padilla’s three-pointer 46 seconds later and closed the quarter with the final five points on a jumper and three-pointer 33 seconds apart.

In the second quarter, Jones had five points, two assists and two steals as the Lobos outscored the Aggies 28-4. She assisted on a three-pointer in the third quarter and on the final Lobo basket of the game. Sunday was the third straight game with two steals for Jones.

Against New Orleans, the Lobo freshman again had an impactful second quarter, recording her first steal with 3:45 left in the quarter and going the length of the floor for the fast-break layup. She created consecutive steals 16 seconds later.
