Game 10 - New Mexico hosts Colorado State

ALBUQUEQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico Lobos, currently 6-3, 3-2 in the Mountain West and coming off a bye week and a 40-35 road win at UNLV, host the Colorado State Rams. The Rams are 2-7 overall at 1-4 in the Mountain West.

The Lobos have not defeated Colorado State since a walk-off field goal for a 29-27 win in 2009. Since that game, the Lobos have lost 13 straight to the Rams.

The game will be broadcast on Altitude, with a free live stream on the MW App and at golobos.com/watch. Robert Portnoy will move from UNM's radio chair to TV to call the action with DonTrell Moore providing analysis. J.J. Buck and Ned James, along with Skye McMillon, will have the radio call on the Lobo Radio Network.

FAST FIVE

Jason Eck is one of seven first-year head coaches for 2025 that has led his team to bowl eligibility, and he is the first Lobo head coach to lead UNM to a bowl game in his first season.

• New Mexico controls its own destiny to finish tied for second in the league by winning the final three games.

Damon Bankston for UNM is the only player in the country with a 100-yard rushing game, a 100-yard receiving game, and a 100-yard kickoff return game.

• UNM is 6-0 this year when rushing for triple-digits.

Luke Drzewiecki is two points away from becoming the all-time leading kick-scorer in Lobo history, and the second-leading scorer of all-time at UNM, behind DonTrell Moore.

• UNM's attendance of 18,233 on Saturday was the largest non-Rio Grande Rivalry crowd since 2018 when UNM hosted Liberty.

New Mexico is looking to get to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the league. With Hawai'i off and with the Mountain West leaders Boise State and San Diego State playing each other on Saturday night, a win over Colorado State would mean New Mexico would be tied for second with two games remaining in the season.

The top two teams in the standings advance to the Mountain West championship game, with the No. 1 team in the standings serving as host.

The Lobos are riding a three-game winning streak, and UNM is looking for a 5-0 start to the season at home. The Lobos haven't started 5-0 at home since 1962.  Additionally, a win would be a sixth straight at home dating back to 2024, and UNM hasn't won six straight at home since 1983 and 1984, when UNM won the final three games of the season at home in 1983 and then opened with three straight home games in 1984, winning those as well.

However, Colorado State has had UNM's number, winning the last 13 games with several losses in excruciating fashion. In 2011, in the regular season opener, UNM lost 14-10, driving to the 5-yard line before a holding penalty moved UNM backwards and eventually turned the ball over.

In 2013, neither team could stop each other as UNM never punted but lost 66-42 as Kipri Bibbs scored six touchdowns for the Rams. In 2017, UNM recovered an onside kick and drove to the Ram 46, but with no time left, UNM opted for a Hail Mary instead of a 63-yard field goal attempt for Jason Sanders, and quarterback Lamar Jordan was sacked on the attempt.

In 2018, UNM led 18-17 when, with two minutes to go, Wyatt Bryan, CSU's all-time leading scorer, missed an 18-yard field goal. Just needing a first down to run out the clock on a third-and-5, quarterback Sheriron Jones had two open receivers and plenty of daylight in front of him, but threw behind a covered receiver. UNM punted, and Bryan hit a 20-yard field goal with no time left for a 20-18 win. It's been that type of series.

The Rams have scuffled to a 2-7 record, and head coach Jay Norvell was fired three weeks ago, but make no mistake, CSU is dangerous. They own a 49-21 win over Fresno State and last week had first-half leads of 7-0 and 10-7 before losing to UNLV 42-10. CSU is one of the best red zone offenses in the nation in terms of converting red zone opportunities into touchdowns (72.7%, good for 19th), and linebacker Owen Long is tied for the national lead with 12.2 tackles per game. Punter Bryan Hansen's 47.3-yard average is sixth nationally.
