SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. – The No. 22 New Mexico men’s golf team began play Tuesday at the second annual NB3 Matchplay at Twin Warriors by splitting its two opening matches. The Lobos fell 3-2 to UNLV in the morning before downing Oregon 3-2 in the afternoon.
With one match remaining, UNLV leads the event with six points, followed by the Lobos and New Mexico State, each with five points. Oregon is third with four points.
In the morning match, the Lobos got victories from Wyatt Provence and Thayer Plewe, but couldn’t find a third point to win the match with the Rebels. In the afternoon match with the Ducks, Provence and Plewe won again and the Lobos took the victory as Mesa Falleur and Emil Albers both halved their respective matches.
“The afternoon makes up for the morning,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “The morning was a little disappointing because we let a few of those matches slip away. But if you let someone stick around, you are giving them a chance to come back and beat you. It was good to bounce back against another solid team in Oregon. In this event, anybody can beat anybody. That’s the beauty of match play. We are happy with the day. We wish it could have been a little bit better, but all you can ask is having a chance to win and we have that tomorrow.”
The NB3 Matchplay concludes Wednesday at Twin Warriors Golf Club with the Lobos playing New Mexico State. Play begins at 10:45am with Golf Channel coverage starting at 2:30 pm MT.
