SAN DIEGO, Calif.— Mercedes Morris scored in the 14th minute of Thursday’s match against San Diego State, with the score holding at the break, however the Aztecs scored twice in the second half for the 2-1 final.
Alyson Campbell made a season-high nine saves in the match, facing 20 shots from the Aztecs with 11 on goal, with the Lobos attempting seven shots, three on goal.
After Campbell made two early saves in the first 12 minutes, UNM’s first shot by Morris at the 13:03 mark found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The Lobo defense fended off 10 shots in the first half to maintain the lead, with the Lobos taking two shots with both on target.
The Aztecs continued to put pressure on the Lobos as play resumed in the second half with two shots in the first two minutes requiring saves by Campbell, but a foul in the 57th minute that resulted in a penalty kick provided the equalizer for SDSU.
Alejandra Puerto tried to respond for UNM with a shot at the 58:39 point of the match that went high, and had another shot blocked in the 64th minute. Claire Roybal’s shot in the 71st minute was saved with Campbell making two saves of her own on the other end minutes apart.
SDSU took the lead on a goal at the 82:42 mark with the Lobos unable to get a shot in the remaining minutes. The Aztecs outshot the Lobos 10-5 in the second half, 6-1 in shots on goal.
With the loss, the Lobos enter the Mountain West Tournament 8-4-6, 4-2-4 in conference and as the six-seed, set to face third-seed Utah State on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. MT.
