ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –– New Mexico swept the Mountain West monthly men’s golf honors for September, the conference announced Thursday. Mesa Falleur was named Mountain West Golfer of the Month while Emil Albers was named Mountain West Freshman of the Month for the opening month of the season.
Falleur and Albers have helped lead the Lobos to their best start to a season since 2004-05, with three top-two finishes to open the year. New Mexico shared the title at The Wohali before runner-up finishes at the William H. Tucker Invitational and the Windon Memorial.
Falleur had three top-20 finishes in September, with a 69.22 stroke average. He earned his first victory as a Lobo at the Windon Memorial, shooting a final round 7-under 65 to finish at 12-under and post a two-shot win. He opened the season with a T-3rd finish at The Wohali, highlighted by a final round 66 to lead UNM to the team title.
Albers had two top-10 finishes in his first three collegiate events. As UNM hosted the William H. Tucker Invitational, Albers won the individual title with a 13-under total, the lowest 54-hole score by a freshman in Lobo history. He became just the second freshman in the 70-year history of the tournament to win, joining Stanford’s Tiger Woods in 1994. He followed that performance with a T-6th at the Windon Memorial, shooting 8-under for the week.
The Lobos return to action on next week with the NB3 Match Play at Twin Warriors. The event, held at the Santa Ana Pueblo, is a made-for-TV event on Golf Channel with the Lobos playing team matches against Oregon, UNLV and New Mexico State over the two days of play on Tuesday and Wednesday.
