ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Three Lobos will take part in the Mountain West Fall Qualifier, which opens on Wednesday and runs through Sunday. The Mountain West Fall Qualifier, featuring singles and doubles, will be held at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas and serves as the qualifying event for the NCAA National Championships later in the Fall.
For New Mexico, three players will take part in singles, and the team will have one doubles pairing.
In singles, UNM will have freshman Vianca Corley and transfers Ana Veroux and Lea Malazdra. Veroux, who went 2-2 at the season-opening Bedford Cup in the Mountains, will take on Tereza Polakova of Boise State in the opening round of 32 on Wednesday. Polakova is a perfect 3-0 on the year.
UNM’s other players will tangle with seeded players in the opening round. Malazdra will face the No. 7 seed Arianna VanHouweling of Air Force, and Corley will draw the top-seed in Amahee Charrier of Nevada.
Malazdra went 1-2 in the opening weekend, and Corley won the Delta Flight, going a perfect 4-0 at the Bedford. Malazdra’s opponent, Van Houweling, is 7-1 on the year, but that lone loss was ironically to Lea’s opponent, Ana Veroux. Corley’s opponent, Amahee, comes in as the No. 1 seed and is 1-1 on the year.
In doubles, Malazdra and Veroux paired up in the opening weekend to go 2-2 on the year. They will face off in the opening Round of 16 against the No. 3 team in Grand Canyon’s Isabella Crossman and Dania Deaifi, a pairing that went 2-2 in its opening tournament.
Looking ahead, a win for Corley will send her into the Round of 16 against either Allison Isaacs of Boise State or Nadia Kojonroj of Air Force. Veroux, with a win, will face either Silver Bijlsma of Wyoming or Gloria Alogo Pigueras of San Diego State.
Malazdra would net a Round of 16 matchup with either UNLV’s Nikol Mircheva or Nevada’s Silvia Costache.
In doubles, a win for UNM would send Veroux and Malazdra to the quarters, where either Colorado State’s Sorcha Caves and Luana Avelar or Nevada’s Silvia Costache or Marlene Forster.
Lobo fans can keep up with all the action via the Mountain West’s Official Tournament Page. Live scoring is also available, and updates will be posted on the official X page of the women’s tennis team.
