LAKE FOREST, ILL. –– The No. 22 New Mexico men’s golf team began play Monday at the Windon Memorial with the first two rounds of play at the Knollwood Club in suburban Chicago. The Lobos shot 19-under over the opening 36 holes and are in fourth place after the first day, just five shots off the lead and one shot out of second place.
New Mexico shot 10-under in the first round before shooting 9-under in the second round. No. 12 Illinois holds the 36-hole lead at 24-under, while Kansas and Notre Dame are both at 20-under. Host Northwestern rounds out the top five at 18-under.
Four Lobos are in the top 16 of the individual leaderboard. Freshman Emil Albers, coming off his victory at the Tucker Invitational, is T-6th at 6-under after rounds of 70 and 68 on Monday. Mesa Falleur is T-12th at 5-under after rounds of 68 and 71. Wyatt Provence and Johnnie Clark are both T-16th at 4-under after posting one even par round and one round of 68. Thayer Plewe rounds out the UNM lineup at 5-over.
“I am really proud of how the team played today,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We are within five of the lead and in position to make a move tomorrow. At some point today, each of the top four guys gave us a round of 4-under, either in the morning or afternoon. That shows our depth, that on any given day each guy on the team can go low.”
The final round of the Windon Memorial is Tuesday is at the Knollwood Club.
