LUBBOCK, Texas – The New Mexico women’s golf team started play Tuesday at the Red Raider Invitational with the opening two rounds of play at Texas Tech’s Rawls Golf Club. Freshman Ava Cepeda shares the 36-hole individual lead at 3-under while the Lobos are T-12th as a team.
New Mexico shot 20-over during the morning’s first round before shooting 15-over in the afternoon to end the day at 35-over. Host Texas Tech holds the team lead at 5-over through 36 holes.
Cepeda shot even par 72 in the first round before carding a 3-under 69 in the afternoon for her first collegiate round under par. She shares the individual lead at 3-under with Lauren Rios of UTSA as only three of the 84 players in the field ended play Tuesday under par.
“Ava’s performance today was incredible,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “The course didn’t play easy and her iron play was spot on. I’m excited to see what she can do tomorrow.”
Chelsea Truong is at 10-over through two rounds after shooting 78 and 76 on Tuesday. Juliette Hole, playing as an individual, is also at 10-under, including a 2-over 74 in the afternoon, the low round of her freshman season thus far. Maria Caparros Levin is at 13-over, Rebecca Galasso is at 15-over and Ciara Rushmer rounds out the UNM lineup at 23-over.
The tournament will conclude Wednesday with the final round at the Rawls Golf Course.
