LUBBOCK, Texas – The New Mexico women’s golf team concluded play Wednesday at the Red Raider Invitational with the final round of play at Texas Tech’s Rawls Golf Club. Freshman Ava Cepeda earned her first collegiate top-five finish to the lead the Lobos, who were 11th as a team.
New Mexico shot 22-over during the final round to finish in 11th place at 57-over. Host Texas Tech won the tournament with a total of 12-over.
Cepeda shot a 4-over 76 on Wednesday to finish the tournament T-5th at 1-over, her first career top-five finish. It marks her second consecutive top-15 finish to begin her career.
“Ava held strong in tough, windy conditions today,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “The birdie putts wouldn’t fall. I have no doubt there will be a tournament win for her in the near future.”
Ciara Rushmer tied Cepeda for low round of the day for UNM, also shooting a 4-over 76 on Wednesday to finish at 27-over. Chelsea Truong finished the tournament at 17-over, Rebecca Galasso finished at 22-over and Maria Caparros Levin rounded out the lineup at 24-over. Juliette Hole, playing as an individual, finished at 15-over.
The Lobos return to action Oct. 3-5 with the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Denver.
