LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Less than 24 hours after New Mexico Volleyball rallied from down 2-1 to take the Lobos’ first meeting with New Mexico State at home, the Aggies returned the favor Wednesday in Las Cruces as the Lobos fell in five (18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 7-15) at the Pan American Center.
With the win, the Aggies (7-3) secure a split of the season series and snap a three-match rivalry win streak by the Lobos (8-3). It’s the first time the two teams have gone all the way to five sets in back-to-back meetings since 1988.
With their nonconference slate now complete, the Lobos turn their attention to Mountain West play that kicks off next Thursday at home against preseason favorites Utah State (2-6).
UNM hit .267 over the first three sets – including 16 kills on match-high .438 hitting in the third – but was held to a .080 average over the last two as the Aggies rallied down the stretch.
Four different Lobos finished with double-digit kills – Gioia Riccato (13), Seenane Brewer (11), Reagan Miller (10) and Addison France (10) – but UNM couldn’t keep pace with a 13-ace performance from NMSU that included seven in the final two sets.
After recording her first career double-double last night, France recorded the first triple-double from a UNM player under Head Coach Jon Newman-Gonchar – and only the eighth by any Mountain West player in the last decade – with 17 digs, 14 assists and 10 kills.
Madeleine Miller came just shy of extending her five-match double-double streak with 36 assists and eight digs, with Camila Canedo finished with double-digit digs for the eighth match in a row with 13.
