COALSVILLE, Utah –– The New Mexico men’s golf team began the 2025-26 season with a title, finishing as co-champions of the inaugural The Wohali. The Lobos finished the event 14-under and shared the title with No. 6 Arizona State among a 14-team field that included four preseason top-25 teams.

The Lobos shot 12-under during Tuesday’s third round to finish at 14-under, tied with the Sun Devils. Host Utah was third, one shot back at 13-under, while No. 13 BYU was the only other team to finish in red figures, placing fourth at 5-under. Kansas State rounded out the top five at 13-over.

Mesa Falleur led UNM with his best finish as a Lobo, T-3rd at 7-under after a final round 5-under 66. Wyatt Provence had the low round of the day for New Mexico, carding a collegiate-best 65 to finish the tournament in seventh place at 5-under. Freshman Thayer Plewe finished the tournament T-12th at 1-under after a final round 69. He becomes the first Lobo freshman to finish a season-opening tournament under par and in the top 15 since 2011-12, when Victor Perez finished T-9th at 3-under in his collegiate debut at the Mark Simpson Invitational. Johnnie Clark finished at 2-over in his UNM debut, while Emil Albers finished his first collegiate event at 8-over.

The victory marks the first time since 2013-14 that the Lobos won their first event of a season. That year, New Mexico opened the season with a win at the Gopher Invitational in Minnesota.

“I am extremely proud of how the guys battled this week,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “To start the season with a tough course, tough conditions, and against a deep field and come out on top is quite an accomplishment. It shows that we belong and makes me excited for what’s to come. It gives us a lot of momentum heading into our home tournament.”

The Lobos also had two players competing at the individual event at nearby Soldier Hollow. Oliver Cage finished third place at 4-under, while Alvaro Portillo finished at 13-over.

“We had some great individual performances this week,” said Harrington. “Mesa was consistent and to start the season with a third-place finish is a great start. For Wyatt to bounce back from his second round to shoot 6-under today was impressive and for Thayer to have a top-12 in his collegiate debut was great. With Ollie shooting three under-par rounds and having a chance to win the individual tournament just shows the depth that we have on this team.”

New Mexico will return to action later this week with the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, their home event at the UNM Championship Course. The tournament will feature 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday, with free admission for the event.
