COALSVILLE, Utah –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened the 2025-26 season Monday with the opening two rounds of The Wohali. The Lobos shot 2-under during the first 36 holes at the Wohali Club to enter the final round in second place, one shot off the lead.

The Lobos shot 6-under during the morning’s first round before shooting 4-over in the afternoon to finish the day at 2-under. Host Utah is the 36-hole leader at 3-under, and the only other team in red figures after the opening day. No. 6 Arizona State (1-over), No. 13 BYU (3-over) and Kansas State (13-over) round out the top five.

Four Lobos are in the individual top 10 after two rounds of play, led by Mesa Falleur who is T-4th at 2-under. The senior shot a 3-under 68 in the morning before a 1-over 72 in the afternoon. Wyatt Provence, Johnnie Clark and Thayer Plewe are all T-10th at 1-over after two rounds. Provence led the Lobos in the first round with a 5-under 66 before shooting 6-over in the second round. Clark, making his UNM debut after transferring from Oklahoma State, had rounds of 71 and 72. The freshman Plewe, in his collegiate debut, shot 73 in the morning before recording his first collegiate round under par with a team-best 1-under 70 in the second round. Fellow freshman Emil Albers is 6-over after consecutive 3-over rounds of 74.

“I am really proud of how the guys handled themselves today on a tough course in tough conditions,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Wyatt and Mesa got us going with great opening rounds in the morning and the entire team adapted well to really firm greens and swirling winds to post the second lowest round of the afternoon. To have four guys in the top 10 after two rounds is great and I am excited to get back out there again tomorrow and watch this team compete.”

The Lobos also had two players competing at the individual event at nearby Soldier Hollow. Oliver Cage is T-2nd after 36 holes at 3-under, while Alvaro Portillo is at 10-over.

The Wohali concludes Tuesday with the final round at the Wohali Club.
