RIVERSIDE, Calif. – New Mexico bounced back from its first loss of the season with an assertive four-set victory over Cal State Fullerton (27-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23) Friday afternoon at Van Dyne Gym, improving to 7-1 on the season and 1-1 in their final weekend of nonconference tournament action at CBU’s The Joust.
Addison France matched a career-high with 17 kills on .389 hitting and Uliana Yastrub notched a career-high of 13 – her second match in a row with double-digit kills – to lead a shorthanded Lobo offense, with Seenane Brewer and Zoe Leonard both adding seven kills apiece.
Madeleine Miller surpassed 30 assists for the seventh time in the Lobos’ first eight matches of the season, finishing with 36 – she also recorded her third double-double in a row with 16 digs in total. Camila Canedo matched a season best with 22 digs – her third 20-dig performance of the year – while dishing out eight assists.
Reagan Miller hit at a team-high .571 clip with no attacking errors as she and Solia Angilau both finished with four kills. Angilau and France both led the way with five total blocks – with three solo blocks between them – and Leonard added four more with a pair of solo blocks in addition.
Yastrub, Canedo, Leonard and Madison Blanco all served up an ace each.
After Yastrub served up an ace to end a tight opening set that saw 10 ties but just two lead changes, the Lobos connected on 17 kills on match-high .410 hitting as they jumped out to a two-set lead – they finished with 14 kills in each of the final two sets as they kept things from going to a fifth set after CSUF took the third. UNM converted on more than 60% of sideout opportunities in all three sets they won, including a match-high 76% in the first.
