Lobos Move to 5-0 with Sweep of NW State

by Connor Gilbert

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — New Mexico Volleyball ran away from Northwestern State early and didn’t look back en route to their third sweep of the young season (25-20, 25-13, 25-15), improving to 5-0 for the first time since 2021 in the process.

The Lobos hit .282 as a team (35 kills on 85 attempts) and recorded 8 service aces as a unit while holding the Lady Demons to just .105 hitting as a team – the Lobos also posted seven team blocks and cruised to a 72% sideout rate to minimize NSU’s chances of getting back in the game. Both Madeleine Miller and Reagan Miller served up two apiece, while Zoe Leonard, Camila Canedo, Uliana Yastrub and Madison Blanco finished with one each to round things out. This weekend, UNM is averaging 2.5 service aces a set after averaging 1.55 per set in their opening weekend of competition at home.

Junior Gioia Riccato led the front line with 10 kills and 7 digs – her fifth match in a row with double-digit kills – and Seenane Brewer chipped in 9 kills and 10 digs to finish just one swing shy of a double-double. Addison France contributed 8 more kills on team-best .438 hitting, adding three block assists and a pair of digs – Zoe Leonard (4 kills, 2 digs, 2 block assists) and Solia Angilau (3 kills, 1 block solo, 4 block assists) made it five Lobos with multiple kills.

After serving up six aces in a 42-assist effort in Thursday’s weekend opener, Madeleine Miller ran the offense efficiently, finishing with 26 assists to pace the Lobo attack while adding a pair of service aces and five digs. Camila Canedo produced six more assists while serving up an ace to go with a team-high 13 digs.

UNM hit .139 in a closer first set before hitting .388 over the next two sets combined – they committed nine attacking errors in the opening set before only producing two combined the rest of the way.
