Lobos Draw with Orediggers
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Sunday’s match against the Colorado School of Mines testing UNM’s response to adversity, with the Lobos falling behind a minute into the match and eventually 2-0 before responding with a goal in the 25th minute. The Lobos continued to answer back with the equalizer in the 55th minute and took the lead less than four minutes later, before the Orediggers scored in the 84th minute for the 3-3 draw.
UNM outshot Mines 13-10 and 7-3 in shots on goal, but it was the Orediggers who capitalized first with a goal 51 seconds into the match and at the 5:04 mark to take a quick lead. The Lobos’ first shot at 22:52 was blocked, but Nicole Anderson found the back of the net 24:31 into the match, going low left corner, striking the ball just outside the 18-yard box on an Alysa Whelchel assist. It marked Anderson’s fourth goal of the season, tying her total from 2024, and Whelchel’s first assist of the season.
Anderson continued to take shots, with her shot at 26:12 saved by the Oredigger keeper and her shot at 30:06 going wide left. Whelchel’s shot at 37:52 was blocked for the final shot by either side as the score held at the half, with each team taking five shots and two shots on goal.
The Lobos tallied the tying goal at 54:47 with Celina Frenz using her back heel to drop off the ball to Fiona Jenkins towards the far side corner, with Jenkins turning the corner and sending the ball into the box, finding Whelchel streaking in the middle of the box, who sent it bottom right for the goal. It was Whelchel’s second goal of the season, while the second assist for Frenz and the fourth for Jenkins.
Less than four minutes later, the Lobos took their first lead of the match with a corner kick starting the opportunity. After Jenkins put the ball back in play, Allie Anderson sent the ball into a crowded box, with the Mines keeper getting a hand on the ball but not able to cleanly bring it in. With the ball loose, Kennedy Brown used her right heel to kick the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
The Lobos forced three more saved by the Mines with three Oredigger shots going wide on the other end of the field to keep the score 3-2. However, Mines tied the match at 83:23, with N. Anderson taking one final shot at 88:13 that went high for the final score.
- Anderson led the Lobos with five shots, while she tied her sister Allie for most shots on goal at two apiece.
