Damon Bankston Named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Watch List
TYLER, Texas — New Mexico running back Damon Bankston has been named to the Preseason Watch List for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, presented annually to the nation’s outstanding Division I college offensive player who meets one or more of the following criteria: 1. Played football at and graduated from a Texas high school; or 2. Currently playing at a Texas college.
Bankston, a transfer from Weber State, is a native of Katy, Texas. Last year with the Wildcats, he rushed for 1,104 yards and six touchdowns while catching 11 passes for 142 yards and another score. Damon (pronounced duh MAWN) is one of four Lobo running backs who led their respective teams in rushing and transferred in.
He joins Scottre Humprhey, D.J. McKinney, and Deshaun Buchanan as a part of the “Rushmore Four” as only UNM can lay claim to four 2024 team leaders in rushing yards on its roster.
To be named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose watchlist, a player must not only excel on the field as an offensive player, but he must also exhibit the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell. Those characteristics include integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, community, and tenacity – Specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented by SPORTyler, Inc., in conjunction with the City of Tyler, Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, and Visit Tyler. Located in downtown Tyler, Texas, the non-profit helps to encourage student-athletes to succeed on and off the field.
