Lobos Net Record 231 Mountain West Scholar-Athletes

by Frank Mercogliano

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Another day, another Mountain West academic record for The University of New Mexico Lobos. UNM had a Mountain West record 231 student-athletes named Scholar-Athletes.  The Lobos have led the Mountain West in Scholar-Athlete selections three years in a row and 11 of the last 12 years.

To earn Mountain West Scholar-Athlete status, student-athletes needed a 3.5 GPA for the year.

New Mexico’s 231 just edged out Utah State, which had 227 student-athletes honored. UNM and USU are the first two schools to have over 200 honored in a single year.  New Mexico’s previous high was 197, set last year.  That 197 a year ago was the previous Mountain West record as well.

Three teams, women’s track & field with 37, women’s cross country with 25, and swimming & diving with 22, all set program records.  Men’s golf and men’s tennis tied their program highs with 10 and eight, respectively.  Football had 23 honorees, baseball had 22, soccer had 18, softball had 17, men’s track & field had 15, volleyball had 11, women’s golf had 8, women’s basketball had 6, women’s tennis had 5, men’s basketball had 2, and men’s cross country had 2.

“I am continually amazed by the achievements of our student-athletes,” said Vice President/Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo. “To lead the Mountain West in total championships, and to lead in both Mountain West All-Academic and Scholar-Athlete selections is a source of tremendous pride for our entire university.”
