Lobos Top MW All-Academic Honorees
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico led all Mountain West institutions with 181 student-athletes named to the Spring Mountain West All-Academic Team. The 181 honorees combined with UNM’s 92 in the fall semester to give the Lobos 273 total members.
The 273 led the Mountain West, and it was the most by any Mountain West school in a non-COVID year, and it tied for the sixth-highest single-year total for any Mountain West school overall. The 273 was two behind the 275 set in the 2020-21 season. That season was the COVID year, marked by altered rules for making the all-academic team.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have complete at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and competed in 50 percent of the teams completed varsity contests. Some latitude was permitted to accommodate injured student-athletes.
The Lobos led the league in two sports, with 26 honorees in baseball and eight in women’s tennis, a total that tied with Nevada and Utah State. The Lobos were consistent across the board, finishing in the top-3 in men’s golf, softball, swimming & diving, men’s track & field, and women’s track & field.
“I’m extremely proud of our student-athletes for their successes on the playing field and in the classroom,” said Vice President/Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo. “To set a conference record for the most honorees speaks to the dedication of our student-athletes, our coaching staff, and our support staff.”
New Mexico had 92 honorees in the fall semester, which was second behind only Fresno State. Behind New Mexico in the spring was Utah State, which had 163 honorees. The 254 honorees for the Aggies overall were also second to UNM.
The 2024-25 academic year marked the 10th time in the last 13 years that the Lobos have led the Mountain West in total All-Academic selections.
