UNM Athletics to Upgrade University Stadium Video Board, Signaling Beginning of Fan Experience Enhancements at University Stadium
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Momentum is rising across the board for Lobo Athletics. The University of New Mexico proudly closed out this year with more Mountain West championships than any other school in the conference. UNM was the top Group of Five institution in the prestigious Learfield Directors’ Cup standings — a clear sign that the Lobos are competing and winning at the highest levels.
A key part of sustaining that success is not only elevating our football program on the field, but also transforming the fan experience at University Stadium — creating an environment that our students, alums, families, and community can be proud of every Saturday in the fall.
Thanks to the incredible support from our state leadership and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, UNM Athletics received an $11 million capital outlay appropriation that will kickstart the transformation of University Stadium. This investment is about more than just football — it’s about building a place that brings people together, showcases the pride of our state, and serves our community and the great state of New Mexico for years to come.

"In meeting with fans, supporters, and season ticket holders, similar themes came up again and again. People want value, they want energy, they want to make memories. We’re confident improvements like this will elevate the in-game experience for all our fans and help create even greater excitement around Lobo Football.”

The first step in this transformation will be replacing the north end zone video board, enhancing clarity, vibrancy, and the overall game-day atmosphere. UNM Athletics is partnering with Daktronics, a national leader in video board technology, to deliver this significant upgrade. Replacing the board is just the start — it reflects our broader commitment to creating an exciting and welcoming game day environment for all of Lobo Nation.
“We as a department are excited to begin rolling out improvements that will directly enhance the fan experience,” said Vice President/Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo. “In meeting with fans, supporters, and season ticket holders, similar themes came up again and again. People want value, they want energy, they want to make memories. We’re confident improvements like this will elevate the in-game experience for all our fans and help create even greater excitement around Lobo Football.”
Already one of the largest in the Mountain West, the upgraded board will feature a state-of-the-art 10mm pixel pitch, delivering stunning, crystal-clear resolution, vibrant colors, and exceptional brightness, bringing every play, stat, and moment to life like never before. The board’s size — over 31 feet high and nearly spanning the width of the field — will remain the same, but the fan experience will be dramatically improved with sharper images and an enhanced atmosphere throughout University Stadium. The project will be complete in time for the home opener on September 6 against Idaho State.
“The video board was an area that needed improvement for our fans, and it’s just the first step,” Lovo added. “Coach Eck talks about ‘Championship Behavior,’ and that mindset is not just for our players and staff — it’s for our university, our athletic department, our fans, and our entire state. The best is yet to come. We are so grateful for the leadership and vision of our state officials who made this possible, and we can’t wait to show everyone how special game day at University Stadium can be.”
With more fan-focused upgrades already in the planning stages, Lobo Athletics is committed to ensuring that the momentum seen on the field and across every sport is matched by an unforgettable game-day experience for everyone who calls New Mexico home.
