Football Sets Program GPA Record as Lobo Student-Athletes Earn 3.54 GPA
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bolstered by a record 3.72 GPA for all female student-athletes and a record-setting semester for Lobo football, University of New Mexico student-athletes turned in a 3.54 overall GPA for the spring semester. It marked the second-best GPA in a non-COVID semester, and the third-best overall. UNM’s student-athletes turned in the best single-year GPA in school history as the 3.54 in the spring combined with the 3.55 in the fall to give UNM the best single-year GPA in school history.
UNM’s female student-athletes had a 3.72, which is the best semester ever, trailing only the 3.74 in the COVID semester. That 3.74 was paced by women’s golf, which had the best semester for any program at UNM with a 4.04 GPA. It marked the fifth 4.0 GPA for women’s golf, and it was only the eighth 4.0 GPA in department history. While the 4.04 amazingly was not a record for women’s golf (it was the second highest for the program behind a 4.08 in the fall of 2022), softball and track and field both had program records.
Softball, which has had four of the top five program GPAs in the last four semesters, had a record 3.70 GPA, and women’s cross country/track and field tied its program record of 3.74, which is set in the fall. That means the program set record GPAs in the fall and the spring while sweeping Mountain West titles in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. Additionally, tennis and volleyball had top five program GPAs as well.
On the men’s side, the group had a 3.38 GPA, the second-best in school history behind only the 3.44 in the fall. Two programs recorded program records in football and men’s golf. Football’s 3.36 GPA not only represented a program record in the first semester under Jason Eck, but it also marked the largest improvement on the men’s side. It comes in a semester where UNM brought in a new coach in Jason Eck and it featured over 35 new players to the program. Men’s golf earned a 3.97 GPA, the highest GPA on the men’s side as men’s golf paired that in a semester in which the team advanced to the NCAA Championships for a third straight year.
Additionally, baseball and tennis turned in top-five program GPA as overall, nine of UNM’s 14 programs had top five program GPAs in the spring.
“Our student-athletes are truly remarkable,” said Vice President/Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo. “Being able to win more conference championships than any other Mountain West school is an incredible accomplishment, but to do that while breaking academic records showcases that our student-athletes are champions in the classroom as well. I’m proud of our student-athletes, or coaches who understand the importance of academics in their recruiting efforts, and Chris Hudson and her team who work tirelessly on behalf of our student-athletes.”
Individually, the Lobos had 100 student-athletes with a 4.0 or better, and 339 student-athletes with a 3.0 or better.
