New Mexico never trailed after posting a four-run second and tacked on eight runs over the next five frames to build a 12-5 lead heading into the ninth. Fresno State made things interesting with four runs on four hits in its final turn to bat, but RHP Luke Wiseman sealed the deal after entering with two outs and a runner aboard to shut the door and pick up his first collegiate save.
Eight different Lobos recorded hits and six drove in at least one run. Jordy Oriach (3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R) capped a huge series with his 22nd and 23rd doubles of the season, while Ethan Ott (2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB) reached base three times and recorded his 21st multi-hit game. Akili Carris (3-for-4, RBI, BB) and Khalil Walker (2-for-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB) both notched multiple hits, with Walker collecting his 16th and 17th doubles of the year. Josh McAlister (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, BB) hit his 16th homer of the season to highlight a three-run fourth.
In total, the Lobos connected on eight doubles, matching their win over Washington State on April 12 for the most in a single game this year.
Caleb Herd (2-for-4, R) and Will Asby (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) rounded out the Lobos’ 18-hit outburst, their 17th game this season with 15 or more knocks.
On the mound, LHP Presley Monteforte (4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) started and exited with a 7-4 lead before RHP Dayne Pengelly (2.1 IP, 1 R, 1 K) earned his third win of the season in relief. LHP Matt Romero, RHP Ryan Castillo and RHP Josh Barnhouse combined to bridge the gap to Wiseman, who retired the tying run at the plate to seal the victory and earn the save.
