Lobos in Fourth Place After First Round of NCAA Regional

by Steve Kirkland

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Monday at the 2025 NCAA Tallahassee Regional with the first round at Seminole Legacy Golf Club. The Lobos shot 3-under during the opening 18 holes to be tied for fourth place after the opening day of play.

The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships. Host Florida State, the No. 2 seed at the regional, holds the 18-hole lead at 14-under. Notre Dame, seeded No. 7, is second at 7-under, while top-seed Ole Miss is third at 6-under. The eighth-seeded Lobos are tied with 12th-seeded Augusta for fourth at 3-under, one shot ahead of fourth-seeded Georgia in sixth at 2-under.

The Lobos were at 7-under late in the round before heavy rains came over the final few holes, causing them to post four late bogeys to finish at 3-under. Wyatt Provence led UNM on Monday with a 3-under round of 69, highlighted by three straight birdies from No. 14 to No. 16. Clark Sonnenberg also shot in red numbers with a 1-under 71, posting a birdie on No. 1 before 17 straight pars to complete his round. Carson Herron shot an even par 72, while Oliver Cage and Mesa Falleur each shot a 1-over 73 to round out the lineup.

“You want to be in position, and that’s where we are after a solid first day,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Wyatt played well coming down the stretch, but had an unfortunate break on the last hole. Clark, as a freshman in his first NCAA Regional, to shoot 1-under was impressive. You can’t win or advance on day one, but you can sure lose it on day one. We had to have a good start and we did that today and are tied for fourth.”

The NCAA Tallahassee Regional continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at Seminole Legacy.
