Lobos Once Again Ace APR Scores
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Once again, the NCAA has released APR scores for all Division I universities, and per the norm, The University of New Mexico had a departmental-wde APR score of 987 as all programs easily passed the 930-minimum score. The Lobos had six programs, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s track & field, women’s cross country, women’s golf and women’s soccer all had perfect four-year rates.
The six programs with perfect scores for the 2023-24 cohort tops last years’ total of two. Overall, 10 of UNM’s 16 programs had perfect single-year APR scores, giving UNM 22 over the last two reports.
Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in Division I, the Academic Progress Rate (APR) holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team’s APR is calculated using a simple and consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and 1 point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term. For schools that do not offer athletics scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
Teams must earn a four-year average APR of 930 to compete in championships.
Of the 16 sports for UNM (Indoor and outdoor track and field are combined for APR purposes), all 16 easily passed the 930-threshold with 14 of the 16 scoring a 980 or better for the rolling four-year average. For just the 2023-24 single-year APR, 10 sports (men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s tennis, men’s track & field, women’s basketball, women’s golf, softball, women’s soccer, women’s swimming & diving, and women’s tennis) all had perfect 1000s.
“I’m incredibly proud of the consistent academic commitment shown by our student-athletes and coaches,” said Vice President/Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo. “These results reflect a championship mindset in the classroom and the outstanding support provided by Chris Hudson and our academic team. Supporting our student-athletes academically is a core part of our mission, and these results are a reflection of that commitment.”
