Lobos Rally Late to Top Aztecs in Extras, 9-7

by Connor Gilbert

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A five-run rally in the top of the ninth followed by a go-ahead three-run burst in the 10th powered New Mexico to a 9-7 series-opening victory over San Diego State on Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium, as the Lobos (26-18, 13-9 MW) claimed their fourth consecutive Mountain West series opener.

Down 4-1 entering the ninth, the Lobos strung together five runs on just three hits—highlighted by a game-tying two-run double from Jordy Oriach followed by a pair of RBI from Ethan Ott and Luke Mansy — to take their first lead since going up 1-0 in the top of the second. After the Aztecs (15-32, 10-12 MW) answered with two of their own in the bottom half to force extras, the Lobos loaded the bases with nobody out yet again and cashed in three more. Will Asby came through with a two-run single in the 10th to put UNM ahead for good, and RHP Ty Cunningham stranded the tying run at second in the bottom half to earn his second win of the season.

Oriach (3-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI) led the Lobos at the plate with his 19th double and 10th three-hit game of the year as he extended his team-leading hit streak to 15 games, while Asby (1-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 BB) reached base three times and delivered his second game-winning RBI in league play. Ethan Ott (2-for-6, RBI) and Khalil Walker (2-for-5, 2 R) also notched multi-hit efforts, while Tye Wood reached base five times out of the leadoff spot with three walks, a hit, and two runs scored.

On the mound, LHP Daxton Purser (6.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R/1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) delivered another strong start, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out four. Taking over to start the seventh, RHP Josh Barnhouse (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K) struck out three without any walks across two scoreless frames, and Cunningham navigated the final two innings despite some late turbulence to seal the win.
