Lobos Selected for NCAA Tallahassee Regional
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s golf team was selected to participate in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, as the NCAA announced the regional fields on Wednesday. The tournament will be held May 12-14 at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club on the campus of Florida State.
The Lobos are making their 32nd NCAA Regional appearance since the format was adopted in 1989, having advanced to the NCAA Championships 20 times. UNM finished fifth last year while competing at the West Lafayette Regional in Indiana to advance to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year, their 44th overall NCAA Championship appearance.
New Mexico, ranked No. 46 nationally, is the No. 8 seed in the Tallahassee Regional. The 14 teams in the field are Ole Miss, Florida State, San Diego State, Georgia, Louisville, Northwestern, Notre Dame, New Mexico, USC, Michigan State, Furman, Augusta, Davidson, Florida A&M. The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, held May 23-28 in Carlsbad, Calif. The top individual (not on advancing teams) will also advance to the NCAA Championships.
“It’s always nice to see your name actually called,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We had a good idea we were in at 46 in the country, but to see where you are going and who is in the field is always a great moment. Now we can begin the preparation for Seminole Legacy. They did a redesign in 2020 and it’s a beast of a golf course. It is 7,800 yards and with a lot of Bermuda grass. I always want to play the hardest golf course we can play because that is the best test of who should advance. We want to be able to put ourselves in position that down the stretch we are in that top five, like we have the last two years. This is when the fun starts and this is why you prepare all season long.”
The Lobos are playing a regional in Florida for the second time, having played at Palm Beach Gardens in 2022. It will be New Mexico’s first ever event at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club.
New Mexico is coming off a third place finish at the Mountain West Championship, its sixth top-five finish of the season and the Lobos’ third straight top five.
