Lobos Come Up Short in Sunday Finale, 14-12

by Connor Gilbert

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico nearly finished with 20 hits for the third game in a row and trimmed a seven-run deficit down to two in the final frame but came up short of a weekend sweep as San Jose State (21-23, 9-12 MW) salvaged Sunday’s series finale, 14-12.

The loss marks the end of UNM’s season-best four-game win streak, but the Lobos (25-18, 12-9 MW) have still won seven of their last 10 and remain in at least a tie for second place in the Mountain West standings heading into next week.

Despite Sunday’s setback, New Mexico posted 56 runs on 60 hits over the weekend and improved to 18-6 at Santa Ana Star Field this season.

After falling behind 14-7 heading into the seventh, UNM rallied late with four runs in the seventh and another in the ninth thanks to Jordy Oriach’s league- and team-leading 13th home run of the year. The Lobos outhit the Spartans 19-16, with six players recording multi-hit games and four players driving in multiple runs.

Ethan Ott (4-for-6, 2 2B, RBI, 1 R) led the charge with his third four-hit game of the year and third game in a row with three or more hits, while Will Asby (3-for-6, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R) drove in a team-high three RBI on three hits while scoring a pair of runs. Jordy Oriach (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, BB) stayed hot with his 13th home run of the year and 41st and 42nd RBI of the season.

Tye Wood (2-for-5, 2 RBI, BB), Brodey Williams (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), and Khalil Walker (3-for-5, 2 R) all chipped in multi-hit games to round things out.

On the mound, the Lobos used five pitchers in the finale, with RHP Ty Cunningham (2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K) tossing scoreless eighth and ninth innings to keep the Lobos within striking distance and lower his season ERA to 3.54.
