Lobos Dominate San Jose in Seven Innings, Clinch MW Weekend Series
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico Baseball (25-17, 12-8 MW) clinched its third consecutive Mountain West weekend series Saturday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field, hammering San Jose State (20-23, 8-12 MW) 19-3 in a seven-inning run-rule victory behind a career performance on the mound from RHP Cristian Mogen.
For the first time this season, the Lobos have won back-to-back games in seven innings thanks to the 10-run rule – they’ve racked up 20 hits in both games, outscoring the Spartans 44-8 in the first 14 innings of the weekend series.
They’re also now winners of nine of their last 11 for the first time this year and winners of four in a row for only the second time. For the time being, UNM moves to sole possession of second place in the MW standings after San Diego State (16-29, 10-10 MW) dropped its first two games this weekend to UNLV and Nevada (24-18, 11-9 MW) split its first two with Air Force. They can guarantee they’ll remain there heading into next weekend’s series if they complete the sweep in Sunday’s finale.

After Khalil Walker broke a scoreless tie with 430-foot two-run bomb to right center, the Lobos plated multiple runs in each of the next four innings to put the game away early, exploding for seven runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth, and seven again in the sixth while pounding out 20 hits in total.
Walker (3-for-3, HR, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 3 R) finished with three-hits for the second game in a row, falling a triple short of the cycle. Will Asby (1-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) launched his 10th homer of the season to spark the big fourth inning, while pinch-hitter Gene Trujillo also went yard for three runs — his second homer in as many games — as part of the Lobos’ seven-run sixth.
Asby is now the fourth Lobo to hit double-digit homers this season behind Jordy Oriach (12), Josh McAlister (12) and Ethan Ott (11).
Ott (2-for-3, 2B, 2 R), Luke Mansy (2-for-3, RBI, 2 R), Oriach (2-for-4, 2 R), and Karsen Waslefsky (2-for-4, RBI, 2 R) all chipped in multi-hit efforts, while Andrew Neil (2-for-2, RBI) came off the bench and delivered two more hits – both in the same inning – to push his batting average to .320 on the season. Brodey Williams (1-for-2, 2 RBI) and Akili Carris (1-for-3, RBI) also drove in runs – with Carris finishing with an RBI for the fourth game in a row and fifth in his last six – as the Lobos capitalized on three San Jose State errors.
After going 3-for-3 in Friday’s weekend opener, Ott is batting .833 against San Jose State on the weekend. Mansy extended his team-best on-base streak to 14 games with his sixth multi-hit game in that span.
On the mound, Cristian Mogen (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 K) went a career-high five frames with little resistance from the Spartans lineup, striking out six and facing just 17 batters while tossing 63 pitches. The redshirt freshman righty retired nine in a row at one point as he earned his second win of the season, improving his season ERA from 19.29 to 9.31 after surpassing his previous season total of innings pitched (4.2) in one outing.
Tommy White (2.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 K) closed out the final two innings, allowing three runs but limiting further damage to keep things in control after a late push from the Spartans.
