CRESWELL, Ore. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Friday at the 2025 Mountain West Championship with the first round of play at the Emerald Valley Golf Club. The Lobos shot 10-under during the opening 18 holes to be in second place after one day of play.

San Diego State is the 18-hole leader after shooting 19-under on Friday. The Lobos are second at 10-under, with San Jose State (9-under), UNLV (8-under) and Fresno State (5-under) rounding out the top five.

Wyatt Provence led UNM on Friday, shooting a 5-under 67, capped by an eagle on the last hole. He is tied for third on the individual leaderboard, one shot off the lead. Clark Sonnenberg is also in the top 10, sitting T-9th at 3-under after an opening round 69. Mesa Falleur, Carson Herron and Oliver Cage each shot a 1-under 71 as all five Lobos shot in red numbers on Friday.

“Today was a solid opening round for the team”, said head coach Jake Harrington. “Anytime that you have all five guys shoot under par on the day is a good day. I was really proud of the way the guys moved around the golf course today. Every time we had a bogey, we bounced back on the next hole with a par or birdie, which led to a solid opening round.”

The Mountain West Championship continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at Emerald Valley Golf Club.
