Lobos Clinch First Road Series in UNLV Finale, 6-3
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – New Mexico Baseball secured its first road series win of the year in Saturday’s weekend finale at UNLV, getting one of its most complete pitching efforts this season to hold the Rebels (19-20, 6-12 MW) to just one run over the final seven frames and pulling away with some late insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to win 6-3.
Now winners of six of their last eight after back-to-back 3-1 weeks and MW series wins, the Lobos (22-17, 10-8 MW) are back into a three-way tie for second place in the league standings with Nevada (21-17, 10-8) and San Diego State (14-26, 10-8). They’ll return home to take on San Jose State (20-20, 8-10 MW) at Santa Ana Star Field for next weekend’s conference series.
At 22-17 on the season, the Lobos have the most wins and highest winning percentage (.564) in the conference heading into next week. They and first-place Fresno State (19-20, 12-6 MW) are the only two teams that have won six of their last four.

The Lobos finished with nine walks and nine hits on the day as a team – their 12th game in a row with eight or more knocks in total. Will Asby (2-for-5, 2 R, 2B), Ethan Ott (2-for-5, 1 RBI) and Akili Carris (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 R) all had multi-hit outings, with Jordy Oriach (1 R, 2B, 2 BB) and Karsen Waslefsky (1-for-2, 1 RBI) both adding a hit each.
Josh McAlister (2 RBI, 1 R, HR) made the most out of his one plate appearance, driving in two runs with his 12th homer of the year – and third of the weekend – in the top of the second as UNM struck first.
Luke Mansy (1 R, 3 BB) and Brodey Williams (2 BB) also drew multiple walks, with Mansy extending his team-leading on base streak to 15 games in the process.
After issuing 13 walks as a pitching staff in Friday’s 3-10 loss, Lobo pitchers only walked three on Saturday — and none from the sixth inning onwards. LHP Presley Monteforte (4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R/2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) was effective in his third weekend start in a row, allowing an early two-spot but keeping things relatively calm with back-to-back scoreless frames in the third and fourth to give the ‘Bos a chance to get going at the plate.
RHP Luke Wiseman and RHP Ty Cunningham were dominant in relief as they combined to throw the rest of the game, holding UNLV to just two hits through the rest of the game without issuing any walks. Wiseman (2.1IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season, retiring the first five he faced and only needing the minimum in the sixth and seventh after producing a crucial third out in the fifth to keep things tied at 3-all. Cunningham (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) retired six of seven over the final two frames — including a pair of punchouts to set the tone in the eighth — to slam the door and earn his eighth save of the year and second of the weekend.
