Women's Tennis FInishes Regular Season at Nevada

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Lobo women’s tennis team heads to Reno, Nevada to take on the Nevada Wolf Pack. The No. 70 Wolf Pack still has sights on a regular season title, although they will need a loss by San Diego State to get it.  For UNM, the match is about ending a six-match losing streak and gaining a little momentum before the Mountain West Tournament.

The Lobos have played well during the six-match slosing streak, twice losing 4-3, to Boise State and Air Force, showing that UNM can play pretty much with anyone in the league.  But down a starter, the Lobos have basically been a player short each time.

UNM has gotten good results from seniors Maud Vandeputte, Sarah O’Connor, Maria Sodre and Sofia Taborga, who have all turned in key wins. Now UNM is looking for a pair of freshmen in Marika Matsoukatidi and Coumba Ben Niangadou.  Regardless No. 70 Nevada is a tough out.  Nevada is 16-3 overall, and it started out 13-1 on the season.  The Pack are in second place in the league at 7-2, and with a win and a San Diego State loss to UNLV would tie for the Mountain West title.
