Tye Wood Named MW Player of the Week

by Connor Gilbert

After finishing with three hits in all three wins for New Mexico Baseball last week, Tye Wood has been named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

It’s the first weekly conference honor for the senior switch-hitting outfielder out of Gardner, Kan. and the fourth for a Lobo this season after Cooper Brass was named Freshman of the Week once and Jordy Oriach earned POTW honors twice.

Wood batted .474 over the Lobos’ 3-1 week at home, racking up team-highs of nine hits, four doubles, and 16 total bases to go with a 1.407 OPS as the Lobos (19-16, 8-7 MW) knocked off Top-100 RPI Texas Tech in midweek action on Tuesday (15-5, 7 Inn.) before taking two of three to clinch the weekend series at home against Washington State (10-9, 24-14, 11-16).

In Tuesday’s midweek run-rule win over the Red Raiders on Tuesday, Wood reached base six times without being retired, going 3-for-3 with three walks to go with four runs scored and three more driven in. The senior switch-hitter picked up hits from both sides of the plate in the first inning alone – the first UNM player to get a hit both left-handed and right-handed in the same game since Mitch Haggerty against Fresno State on April 12, 2013. He finished a triple shy of the cycle after drawing a walk in each of his final three plate appearances.

He finished with three hits in each of his next two games as the Lobos clinched the weekend series with a pair of wins over Washington State, with three more doubles on the weekend series.
