Lobos in Fifth After Opening Day at ASU Thunderbird Collegiate

PHOENIX –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Friday at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate with the opening two rounds of play at the Papago Golf Course. The Lobos shot 17-under over the opening 36 holes of their regular season finale to be tied for fifth place.

New Mexico, ranked No. 49 nationally, shot 14-under in the first round before 3-under in the second round. Host Arizona State, ranked No. 5 nationally, leads at 31-under. No. 41 Houston is in second at 21-under, while No. 33 Colorado and Grand Canyon are tied for third at 18-under. The Lobos are one shot behind at 17-under, tied for fifth with No. 10 UCLA and No. 14 Utah.

Carson Herron led the Lobos on Friday, shooting rounds of 66 and 68 to be T-4th on the individual leaderboard at 8-under, two shots off the lead. Mesa Falleur shot rounds of 65 and 71 to be T-8th at 6-under. Clark Sonnenberg is at 3-under after rounds of 68 and 71. Wyatt Provence had back-to-round rounds of even par 71, while Alvaro Portillo is at 17-over through two rounds.

The ASU Thunderbird Collegiate concludes Saturday with the final round of play at Papago Golf Course.
